Ladies: Be a Girls on the Run Coach!

Girls on the Run of Puget Sound is now accepting coach applications for the Fall 2011 season!

Coaches do not have to be runners! Volunteer coaches work directly with the 3rd-5th grade girls in the Girls on the Run program by leading the girls through fun & active lessons while helping them prepare for the non-competitive 5K event at the end of the season. Read what past coaches have said about their experience:

“I really loved watching the girls evolve and come to be kinder and stronger to themselves and their teammates. Every young girl wants to have someone come alongside her and say, ‘Way to go! I knew you could do it!’ What a privilege to be that person in these young girls’ lives!”

“As a first-time coach I felt really supported and well-prepared by the GOTR organization and will definitely volunteer to coach another group of amazing girls!”

“[Through coaching] I was able to fulfill my person goal of being a positive influence for girls in those critical years prior to the challenges of middle school”

Girls on the Run Needs Coaches!

Girls On the Run of Puget Sound, a nonprofit, after school empowerment program for girls aged 8-11, is seeking volunteer coaches for its fall program starting this month.

Coaches guide groups of girls in the 3rd-5th grade age, through an easy-to-follow, well researched curriculum that uses active running games to teach healthy lifestyle lessons and train the girls for a non-competitive 5k race at the end of the session. Watch what other coaches say about why they volunteer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dqwuydwl6I0

  • Volunteer coaches must be available during after-school hours.
  • Program sites meet twice a week after school, 3-5 p.m. timeframe.
  • Coaches are expected to attend every practice.
  • Each site has 2 – 4 coaches – one Head Coach and Assistant Coaches as needed.
  • The program is offered twice a year: Fall Session (September to December) and Spring Session (March to June). Each session runs for 10 weeks.
  • Head Coaches must be 21 years or older.
  • Assistant Coaches must be 16 years or older.

Group Health's Team at the Girls on the Run spring 5k

New coaches must submit an application, attend a one-hour group interview, attend a six-hour training and consent to a background check. For more information email Amber Swim amber@girlsrun.org or visit www.girlsrun.org/coaching.

Group Health’s Kent Medical Center is an official sponsor of the program. You can also contact Katie McCarthy, Girls on the Run board member, and Group Health employee: mccarthy.kx@ghc.org. There is an immediate need for the Madrona School in SeaTac, Tues.-Thurs, from 3:20-5 p.m.

Teddy Bear Clinic!

Group Health hosted a Teddy Bear Clinic at Mobius Kids Science Center in Spokane on August 12.  The clinical team was led by Group Health pediatrician, Dr. Cicely White, along with Dr. Nalini Gupta and medical student, Hannah Qualls.  Modeled after Dr. Rob Nohle’s very successful Teddy Bear Clinic at KidsQuest Children’s Museum in Seattle, the idea is to alleviate any fears children may have about going to the doctor.  Children bring their teddy bears for a check-up and get to assist with the examination.  Ears, nose, throat and fur is checked along with height and weight of the bear; an urgent care repair station completes the visit (if needed).

Group Health a finalist in Puget Sound Business Journal's Best Workplaces – PHOTOS

More than 50 staff from all over Group Health gathered in our awesome green shirts at Safeco Field, Thursday, Aug. 12 with more than 80 other companies to celebrate being a finalist in the Puget Sound Business Journal’s Best Workplaces in Washington contest.

The Puget Sound Business Journal Best Workplaces contest, now in its fourth year, identifies the area’s top employers through composite scores from a random, individual staff survey.

This year over one fifth of our staff voted in the survey. Ratings factors included team effectiveness, trust in leaders, feeling valued, and work engagement.

As you can tell from the photos below, we definitely had a presence at the event!
